This book, a collection of research articles, seeks to understand the factors that contribute to risky adolescent behavior. The authors see risky adolescent behaviors as comorbid and hope that the research in this book will contribute to the development of integrated interventions that will target and decrease adolescent risk across multiple behaviors.
The 39 chapters in this book, each by different authors, are grouped into four parts:
• “Adolescents as Decision Makers,” which attempts to understand the processes by which adolescents make decisions
• “Common Pathways and Influences on Adolescent Risk Behavior,” which explores the factors – including personality, friends and family, and media – that influence adolescent decision-making
• “Perspectives From Different Risk Research Traditions,” which addresses research about specific risky adolescent behaviors, namely gambling, sexual activity, suicide, and drug use
• “Overarching Approaches and Recommendations for Future Research,” which speculates about potential integrated risk-reduction solutions and makes suggestions to guide future research
