Description
With this book, author Annette Lareau analyzes the effect of social class on parenting styles. Based on a study involving white and African-American families, Lareau finds that middle-class parents actively participate in their children’s lives to “develop” them, whereas working-class and poor parents give their children more independence to facilitate their “natural growth.” These different approaches affect how parents schedule their children’s time, use language to discipline their children, and intercede in their children’s school lives. Lareau sees advantages and disadvantages to each approach, but concludes that institutions such as schools are set up to privilege the middle-class style of upbringing.
