This book gives providers a guide to understanding and addressing the often complex needs of people with mental illness who are parents. It summarizes the challenges that parents with mental illness face, including unmet economic needs and social stigma, and outlines the principles around which treatment must be built: it must be centered around the needs of the family, it must emphasize the parent’s strengths, and it must be recovery and resilience-focused. Next, the authors translate those principles into an intervention called Family Options, where the provider, the parent, and the parent’s chosen family members form a Family Team which works together to accomplish agreed-upon goals. In the last chapter, the authors explore the community-wide implications of family-centered mental health care and try to apply the principles behind Family Options to various other health care contexts.
