Description
This book recognizes the phenomenon of “secondary trauma,” in which caregivers burn out after repeated exposure to patients’ trauma – making them unable to care effectively for their patients and live fulfilling lives. Authors Laura van Dernoot Lipsky and Connie Burk attribute secondary trauma in part to the unsustainable urgency with which many professional caregivers approach their jobs, and they include explanations of sixteen symptoms of secondary trauma to help the caregiving professional understand how secondary trauma might affect them. The authors also recommend a series of self-care practices called the Five Directions, based largely in presence and mindfulness, which will allow the caregiving professional to heal from secondary trauma and function better both in their job and in their personal life.
