Description
This book advises the reader on techniques for presenting data and statistical evidence in a clear, readable, honest, and engaging fashion. Author Edward R. Tufte uses theories about information density and relationships between words and images, supported by examples from art history and related to design practices today, to illustrate how artwork and design can be used as evidence. Topics include the use of sparklines, defined as “data-intense, design-simple, word-sized graphics;” the fundamental principles of analytic design; and the ways that presenters of data can corrupt the truth through presentation. Tufte concludes this book with a long, passionate critique of Microsoft PowerPoint, which he believes contributes to intellectual laziness because of its bullet-point format.
