Description
This book explains how and why even well-intentioned people have hidden biases with regards to race, gender, sexuality, religion, class, and other social groupings. The authors introduce the Implicit Association Test, which measures the brain’s unconscious associations of certain social groups with certain stereotypes, to demonstrate that the brain’s unconscious biases can contradict people’s conscious values and beliefs. They analyze how the brain uses stereotypes to categorize people and the potential truth or validity of stereotyping, as well as the harm that stereotypes cause to members of the stereotyped group. Finally, they address the developmental psychology and neurology of stereotypes and provide advice for how individuals can overcome the brain’s unconscious biases so that they can truly be as open-minded and fair as they would like to be.
